a. What What differentiates AFJ Onlus from other voluntary associations that are seeking sponsorship for a child's education?
AFJ onlus originates from the great pain of a mother who lost a son and felt the need to do something for other children. She chose the poor children in a village of Southern Sri Lanka, where she had been on holiday with her son when he was still a boy and towards whom he showed to care of as well as later in 2004 during tsunami.
b. In which countries do you operate?
Currently only in Sri Lanka but the Statute of AFJ onlus considers itcan operatein all countries where there is a need, abroad or in Italy.
c. Who are AFJ onlus partners?
AFJ onlus is not tied to any organization. We work on our own with the help of volunteers, by using spontaneous donations but mainly with done through the events we organize.
d. How and when did AFJ onlus start its activities?
We wereofficially born as AFJ onlus on September 8th, 2009 but back in December 2006, or six months after the fateful June 7th, 2006 the President operated first in Senegal and then chose Sri Lanka for the reasons already explained.
The first aid was the construction of a brick house for the young mother and her two children who lived in a mud house periodically flooded from monsoon rain, the roof had been make of pieces of sheet metal.
The second aid was the cleaning/renovation of a well for the use of a Hikkaduwa and the construction of an adjoining room to be used for changing clothes. These two aids did not calm the mind of the President and hence the desire to build a school to teach poor children free of charge, the English language and the use of computer was born. The search began for a place to host the lessons, children, teachers, textbooks and so on, until we decided to buy land and build our own structure and save on rent.
Today we host 52 children, five teachers and two non-teachers who work with us, all regularly employed. All these children can be sponsored as well as their brother/sisters.Our goal is to offer them:
- Two tools “the most important language in the world and the use of computer”, which will enable them to cope with life
- A building where they can attend daily to learn these tools but also a place to meet with friends, where they can see movies in English, consult books from the library, take courses of different kind such as Italian cookery, painting, etc.
- A library with books in English
- Cultural help
- Economic help for:
- Food
- Dressing
- School taxes that family has to pay to make their child to attend high school
- Confrontation with other cultures like Italian, British and American
e. Is AFJ onlus affiliated with a church or any other organizations?
We are not affiliated with a church or any other organization. We intend to maintain this independence respecting Fabio Jonathan memory, to whom everything is dedicate. In Sri Lanka we worked many years without success, to get recognition as an Italian onlus operating in Sri Lanka. Finally on February 1rst, 2013 we made an Ltd. With the same Statute of the Italian onlus and where it is specified that no member shall be entitled to any remuneration except that who at the same time works as a teacher for the school and in such a case would be rewarded as a teacher but not as a partner.
All staff members are regularly employed in accordance with the local regulations.
